Programs and Projects

Regular K-6 Program
Students receive instruction in language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, physical education, art and health as set out by Alberta Learning. A very accomplished music teacher teaches our student music.  Computer technology is an integrated part of our instruction.  Students have full internet access, CD ROMS, online references, and a variety of software that complements subjects.   In addition students recieve daily physical education instruction.

Arts Core Alternative Program
In September 2007 we introduced the Arts Core program.  Students are recieving instruction in visual arts, media arts, music and performance arts.  Key strategies from each of the areas will be integrated into our core instruction to support indivdual learning styles and assist in differentiating instruction.  In addition we have had the opportunity to work with a variety of artists including the Royal Conservatory program Learning Through The Arts.

Behavioural Assistance Program
Students in grade 4 to 6 who have had difficulty in a regular program and meet the requirements to be accepted into this special program are taught in a small group setting with strictly defined behavioural outcomes.  Students in this class work towards developing behaviours that will allow them to return to a regular classroom in their home school.  In September 2007 we will be starting a three year pilot project which will allow students in this program to have daily access to a laptop computer to support their academice needs.

Balanced Literacy
Mount Royal School uses the Balanced Literacy Program from Kindergarten to Grade 6 to ensure quality education in the area of literacy development.  We believe the more children read, and the more they write, the better readers and writers they will become.  In our Balanced Literacy Program students are actively involved in using literature.
This interactive process consists of:

  • Exposure to a wide variety of literature (novel studies, hearing stories, silent reading, shared reading, guided reading, home reading, creating stories, etc.)
  • Responding to literature in a variety of ways (daily writing, class books, guided writing, drama role-playing, discussion, thinking skills, etc.)
  • Incorporating literature into other curricular areas to provide background, experiences and extensions of content.

The above strategies are used to teach the important mechanics of reading and writing, spelling, grammar, phonics, word attack skills, comprehension, printing, cursive writing, etc.

Kindergarten
Kindergarten program at Mount Royal is half day and is designed to introduce children to school through purposeful, successful living and learning.  This is carried out through the development of themes and concepts integrated with mathematics, language arts, physical education, science and art.  Learning is facilitated through teacher-directed activities, self selected centre time, group work and various hands-on and field trip experiences.  Parents assist the teacher with the organization and planning of hands-on learning activities and special events.  Parents are a valued and integral part of the kindergarten environment to ensure that your child has access to this excellent program please register early as space is limited.  An evening parent evening will be taking place on May 6, 2008 at 6:30 pm please contact the school  at 477-8202 to add your name to our contact list.

Library
We have an exceptional children's library thanks to the continued support from our parent council who donate a substantial sum of money each year to the purchase of new books.

Author Feature
Each month we feature an author in our library.  For more information please see our monthly newsletter.  The following authors/illustrators will be presenting at Mount Royal during the 2007-2008 school year:  Kamilla Ried and Lorna Bennett.

Birthday Books
When your child has a birthday, you may wish to remember the occasion by donating a book to the school library.  Donated books will have a special inscription put in them to recognize your child.  Instead of a book, parents may make a donation towards the purchase of a book, our librarian Mrs. Parcels or your teacher can supply you with a list of book titles.

Research Fair
The research fair is an excellent project to help students develop skills in accessing accurate information on a non-fiction topic.  Students in each grade learn skills in accessing information from books and the Internet to create their own written project. Come celebrate our students' success at our annual research fair.

Special Projects
During the year we have special projects and activities that students participate to expand their learning.  Check out the information below to learn more.
